Tryptophan

Essential for the production of serotonin and melatonin, tryptophan contributes to important processes involved in mood, emotional well-being, stress responses, and sleep.

What is tryptophan?

L-tryptophan, usually referred to as tryptophan, is an essential amino acid that must come from your diet or supplements, as the body cannot make it itself.

One of its key functions is serving as a precursor to serotonin, a chemical messenger that helps transmit signals between nerve cells.

Serotonin is present throughout the body, especially in the digestive tract and brain, where it is involved in:

  • Nerve signalling – transmitting messages between nerve cells
  • Mood – influencing emotional stability and well-being
  • Satiety/hunger – helping control appetite, fullness, and cravings
  • Sleep – contributing to normal sleep patterns and wakefulness

The body also uses tryptophan to produce melatonin, a hormone that helps maintain the natural sleep–wake rhythm, or circadian cycle.

Benefits of tryptophan supplements

As a starting point for serotonin and melatonin synthesis, tryptophan is often included in supplements designed to encourage relaxation, restful sleep, emotional balance, and a healthy response to everyday stress.
