What is lysine?

Lysine, also known as L-lysine, is an essential amino acid that the body cannot produce on its own and must obtain through food or supplements.

As a building block of proteins, lysine is important for tissue growth and repair, muscle maintenance, and maintaining a healthy nitrogen balance. It also plays a role in collagen formation, essential for skin, bones, and connective tissues, and is needed to produce carnitine, a compound involved in converting fatty acids into energy.

Lysine benefits

As an essential amino acid, lysine plays several important roles in the body:

• Protein synthesis – lysine is a building block of proteins needed for muscle growth, maintenance, and repair.
• Collagen formation – it’s involved in producing collagen and elastin, important structural proteins in skin, bones, and connective tissues.
• Energy metabolism – lysine is needed to produce carnitine, which helps transport fatty acids into mitochondria for energy production.
• Calcium metabolism – research suggests lysine may influence calcium absorption and retention, potentially contributing to bone health.

Most balanced diets provide sufficient essential amino acids, even for athletes who engage in frequent, vigorous exercise. However, vegetarians and vegans who consume too few lysine-rich foods, such as beans, lentils, and soy products, may be at greater risk of inadequate lysine intake.
